Greenbelt Community Orchestra started rehearsing in 2023, led by conductors Derek Maseloff and Seth Glabman. Derek left us in the fall of 2025 to take an army band conducting position, but we have since built a relationship with the conducting program at University of Maryland, and are enjoying the talents and experience of the Masters and Doctoral students as well as faculty members.
Our mission is to provide an outlet for local musicians to play together and to share our love of music with the local community. All orchestral instruments are welcome (until we reach capacity for each section). We aim to have a special focus on string players, who are currently under-served locally.
Our vision is to grow together as a friendly and inclusive group of musicians who play diverse and interestingly-themed programs, including music by under-represented voices such as women and people of color. We aim to have fun at rehearsals while also working hard to present the best possible concerts for our audience given the range of abilities in the orchestra. We do not audition, although we cap the number in each section to maintain balance, and we encourage the winds/brass/percussion to rotate parts so that everyone has a chance to take the lead as far as their abilities allow. We are part of the Greenbelt community and the expectation is that most, if not all, concerts will be in Greenbelt and free and open to the public.
